Independent Midwives are fully qualified, registered midwives who have chosen to provide care outside of the NHS. We practice the traditional skills of the midwife, outside of a hospital environment.

Independent Midwives have the ability to chose how many women they care for each year, most of us only look after a maximum of two women per month, which means we are able to give full time and attention to the women we care for. We are able to build up a trusting relationship with our clients as well as having the opportunity to get to know the whole family. Although we work outside of a hospital environment we are still governed by The Midwives Rules, which ensures that we practice in a safe and professional manner.

Midwifery is the most regulated profession in the UK and this is the same whether we practice independently or within the NHS. Midwives are experts in providing care for women throughout their pregnancy, birth and postnatal period. We are the only professionals, (other than a doctor who must have had training in obstetrics), allowed to attend a woman through childbirth. All midwives are registered with their governing body (The Nursing and Midwifery Council) and must receive regular updating each year. We all have a named Supervisor of Midwives who we must meet with at least annually for a supervisory meeting and to assess the safety of our equipment.
